Disney is making a major push into artificial intelligence, announcing a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI while granting the startup a three-year licensing deal to use more than 200 iconic Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters on Sora, OpenAI’s AI video generator.
The move gives users the ability to generate short videos featuring major Disney intellectual property beginning next year.

CEO Bob Iger said the partnership aims to expand Disney’s storytelling capabilities through AI while protecting creators’ rights.
As part of the deal, Disney will receive warrants for more OpenAI equity, adopt ChatGPT across its workforce, and collaborate on new AI tools.

The agreement marks a shift in Disney’s stance as the company fights AI-driven copyright disputes. It is currently suing Midjourney and warning other startups over unauthorized use of its IP.
OpenAI has committed to “robust controls” to prevent harmful or illegal content on its platforms.
