The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, issuing subpoenas related to her probes of the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association.

A grand jury has been convened in Albany to examine potential violations of constitutional rights in James' handling of the civil fraud case against President Donald Trump.

James previously secured a $450 million judgment against Trump and his businesses for inflating property values.

Trump's legal team claims the investigation into James is justified, while her attorney, Abbe Lowell, denounced it as political retribution. The Justice Department declined to comment.

James' office also won reforms in its case against the NRA. Her team has called the probe an abuse of power and vowed to defend its litigation record.
