Elon Musk has threatened Democrats planning to investigate his government role and alleged conflicts of interest if they gain control of Congress in the November 3 elections.

Musk and President Donald Trump launched the Department of Government Efficiency, which has faced scrutiny over Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla contracts with federal agencies. Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren has raised concerns about what she described as “astounding” conflicts of interest. Responding on X, Musk wrote, “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”

If Democrats secure a House majority, they could use congressional powers to compel testimony and examine Musk’s access to sensitive government information, including Social Security records.

Musk remains an important financial backer of Republican candidates, but his government role continues to attract criticism. He also faces scrutiny over efforts during 2025 to cut nearly 300,000 federal employees, adding to tensions surrounding his involvement in government operations.
