Europe Warns Trump’s New Tariffs Put Trade Deals At Risk

European officials warned that recent U.S. trade agreements could be jeopardized after President Donald Trump imposed a new 15 percent global tariff on imports, escalating tensions with key allies.

The move followed a Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump’s earlier tariff framework. The administration responded by invoking a different legal authority to impose the maximum temporary tariff allowed without congressional approval. The new duties took effect immediately.

European Union leaders said the decision injects uncertainty into trade deals signed last year. European Commission officials stressed that existing agreements must be honored, while lawmakers warned the bloc could suspend implementation pending legal review. Germany and France signaled a tougher collective response may follow.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the deals remain intact and talks with partners are ongoing. Analysts warned the policy risks damaging relations with America’s closest allies and unsettling global markets.
