The European Commission has proposed its 19th sanctions package against Russia, citing Moscow’s “contempt for diplomacy and international law”. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed to Russian missile strikes on Ukraine and drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace as justification for tougher measures.
The proposal includes a ban on Russian liquified natural gas imports and tighter restrictions on banks that help Moscow evade sanctions. Brussels says the goal is to choke off revenue fueling Russia’s war economy, which relies heavily on fossil fuel exports.

The EU also plans new penalties against individuals involved in the abduction and indoctrination of Ukrainian children, according to foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
