Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former leader of the Southside Compton Crips, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison on Tuesday for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. He received 731 days of credit for time served.

Prosecutors built their case using Davis’s statements in a 2019 memoir and interviews with police in 2008. The case proceeded without a murder weapon after Judge Carli Kierny ruled that Davis’s proffer agreement was void.

Investigators said the shooting was retaliation for a confrontation earlier that night between Shakur’s entourage and Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Davis previously alleged that Sean “Diddy” Combs offered him $1 million to kill Shakur. Combs has denied the allegation, calling it an attempt to gain notoriety.

The trial focused solely on Shakur’s killing, and Davis remains the only person charged in the case.
