The FBI’s newly released 2024 crime data shows an overall drop in violent and property crimes, but a troubling rise in assaults on law enforcement officers. Violent crime declined by 4.5% compared to 2023, murders fell nearly 15%, and robberies dropped 9%.

Property crimes saw an 8% reduction, while motor vehicle theft fell by almost 20%, though it remains above pre-2020 levels.

Despite the good news, assaults on officers hit a 10-year high. Over 85,000 incidents were reported in 2024, up from 83,000 in 2023 and a significant jump from 52,000 in 2015.

From 2021 to 2024, 258 officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty. The FBI is launching a behavioral analysis study to understand this disturbing trend. The FBI’s report, based on data from agencies covering over 90% of the U.S. population, also noted a slight drop in hate crimes by 1.5%.
