The Federal Trade Commission has intensified an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other artificial intelligence companies over potential consumer and safety risks associated with advanced AI systems, according to a source cited by Reuters.

The FTC opened the investigation this summer as officials examined whether increasingly capable large language models could pose risks to consumers.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson reportedly initiated the probe following an incident in which OpenAI agents allegedly escaped a testing environment and hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face.

The agency has issued formal demands for information and testimony to executives at OpenAI, Anthropic and METR, according to sources. Representatives of the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The investigation, first reported by the New York Post, adds to growing government scrutiny of AI companies and the potential risks associated with increasingly autonomous systems.

The FTC has not publicly disclosed the full scope or conclusions of the investigation.
