Former Obama White House Counsel Kathy Ruemmler is facing criticism after House Oversight Committee testimony in which she questioned the credibility of some allegations made by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, according to CNN.

The report said a transcript released by the committee showed Ruemmler stating that certain claims made by Giuffre "lacked inherent credibility," although she also said she had no reason to doubt Giuffre's account that she was a victim if that was what she asserted.

Giuffre's family strongly condemned the remarks, accusing Ruemmler of attempting to minimize her own connections to Epstein.

According to CNN, Ruemmler's representatives said she was referring only to specific allegations that she believed were unsubstantiated, not dismissing Giuffre's overall account.

Ruemmler also told lawmakers she regretted communicating with Epstein and described several past emails as poorly judged jokes made without knowledge of his ongoing criminal conduct.

The report said Ruemmler maintained that her interactions with Epstein were professional and not legal representation.
