Spain’s quest to build a natural gas pipeline across the Pyrenees is stymied by French skepticism. The MidCat pipeline could carry seven billion cubic meters of gas annually from Catalonia to southwest France.
Spain is reigniting its ambition to become western Europe’s new hub for gas imported from beyond the continent as the flow of Russian gas to the region through pipelines such as Nord Stream 1 dwindles, according to the Financial Times.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed France’s opposition to the multimillion euro project this month, saying the argument that MidCat would alleviate Europe’s gas problems was “factually false,” the FT said.
