Researchers have reported new advances in gene-editing technology that could eventually benefit both human medicine and pet owners, including the development of gene-edited beagles designed to reduce allergic reactions.
According to the report, scientists from Columbia University published findings showing that precise DNA changes can be introduced into early-stage human embryos without causing major chromosomal abnormalities.
The report said the researchers improved the gene-editing process by replacing messenger RNA with a laboratory-produced protein, overcoming technical challenges that had previously disrupted embryo development.
In a separate application, biotechnology company Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR technology to develop hypoallergenic beagles that could provide an alternative for people with dog allergies.
According to the report, bioethicists welcomed the scientific progress but cautioned that wider use of gene editing raises concerns about unintended genetic effects, access to the technology and its potential impact on the adoption of shelter animals.
