A senior Russian general accused of ordering the 2024 missile strike on a children's hospital in Kyiv was shot and wounded on Thursday, according to CNN.

Russia's Investigative Committee said it opened a probe into the attempted murder of a serviceman shot several times in Engels, in the Saratov region.

The committee withheld the man's name, though Russian Telegram channels widely identified him as Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division within Russia's Long-Range Aviation.

Ukraine's Security Service and Prosecutor General charged him with war crimes three days ago, alleging he ordered a Kh-101 cruise missile launch on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt hospital in July 2024. That strike killed three people, injured dozens, and wrecked intensive care, oncology and surgical wings.
