German authorities are investigating an explosives-laden drone discovered near Leipzig/Halle Airport, with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt describing the incident as a "new threat scenario" for the country, reported by CNN.
The drone, found near the airport's cargo runway, forced a temporary suspension of flights while bomb disposal teams removed its detonator. Dobrindt said the operation appeared professionally planned and did not rule out the involvement of foreign actors.
The report said Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe's busiest cargo hubs and currently hosts Ukraine's Antonov Airlines fleet.
According to Germany's Bild newspaper, investigators believe only a technical malfunction prevented the explosive device from detonating. Authorities have not confirmed reports suggesting the second drone may have been conducting surveillance.
The incident comes amid growing European concerns over drone-related sabotage targeting critical infrastructure.
