Google has announced a $17 billion investment to establish its first data centre campus in Wyoming, partnering with several energy and infrastructure companies.

The proposed facility will have a 702-megawatt capacity and incorporate fuel-cell technology and carbon capture. Google said its air-cooled design would minimise pressure on local water resources.

However, the project faces growing public and political opposition. A University of Wyoming poll found that only 30 per cent of residents supported expanding AI infrastructure. The announcement also follows midterm elections in which voters rejected 40 of 41 data centre-related ballot measures.

Google officials previously met more than 200 residents in Laramie County to gather feedback. Nevertheless, local leaders and politicians, including Congressman-elect Chuck Gray, have expressed concerns about large-scale data centre development, despite Google's pledge to match 100 per cent of its electricity consumption.
