Google, Meta Platforms and TikTok have filed lawsuits against California seeking to block enforcement of Assembly Bill 1709, which restricts certain social media features for children under 16.

Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 10, the law targets features described as psychologically exploitative.

The companies argue that the legislation violates First Amendment protections and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act by interfering with platforms' editorial decisions. The lawsuits were filed separately in San Jose, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is the sole defendant. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has also criticised the legislation, describing it as a threat to privacy and free speech.

The legal challenge comes amid thousands of lawsuits alleging social media platforms have harmed young people's mental health, alongside growing international efforts to restrict children's access to social media.
