Graham Platner has officially withdrawn from Maine's U.S. Senate race, according to a report.

The Maine Secretary of State's Office confirmed on Friday that Platner requested his name be removed from the ballot after suspending his campaign earlier in the week.

The report said Platner came under mounting pressure from fellow Democrats following a sexual assault allegation involving a former girlfriend.

Platner has denied the accusation, stating that any claims of non-consensual behavior are "categorically untrue."

According to the report, Maine Democrats are now working to select a replacement candidate for the closely watched Senate contest.

State election officials have set a July 27 deadline for the party to name a new nominee, and the formal replacement process is expected to be announced shortly.

The party hopes to field a candidate capable of challenging for the Republican-held Senate seat in the general election.
