Grand Canyon Body Identified As Missing Hiker Timothy Smith

The remains of Timothy Allen Smith, a 53-year-old pilot from Star Valley, Wyoming, have been identified after he went missing during a flash flood in the Grand Canyon on August 29.

His wife, Carrie Smith, confirmed that rangers found his body Monday near Crystal Rapids, ending a three-week search and bringing the flood’s death toll to three.

Smith was hiking with Brent Rosenkranz and John Giusti when powerful floodwaters swept through the canyon. More than 80 people were rescued during the two-day flooding, which severely affected the Phantom Ranch area and damaged the pipeline supplying water to the South Rim.

In a Facebook post, Carrie Smith said the family no longer had to endure the uncertainty of waiting for news and remembered her husband as someone who was doing something he loved.

National Park Service officials said the nearly completed water pipeline suffered only limited damage despite the flooding. They expect a reliable water supply to the canyon to be restored within weeks rather than months.
