After weeks of speculation, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is set to endorse New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the frontrunner in the city’s mayoral race.

The endorsement follows two private meetings in Brooklyn and pressure from progressive Democrats, despite concerns among moderates who view Mamdani as a potential liability in swing districts.
Jeffries, who initially questioned Mamdani’s refusal to denounce the slogan “globalize the intifada,” praised the candidate’s focus on affordability and his decision to retain NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch if elected. Civil rights leader Al Sharpton reportedly helped facilitate discussions between the two camps.

The move aligns Jeffries with Gov. Kathy Hochul, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, all of whom back Mamdani.
However, prominent figures such as Rep. Ritchie Torres and New York Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs have withheld support, deepening divides within the party ahead of 2026.
