Hegseth To Meet Anthropic CEO Amid Tensions Over Military AI Usage: Report

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to meet Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the Pentagon as tensions rise over military access to the company’s AI model, Claude, according to Axios.

Claude is currently the only AI model cleared for use inside classified U.S. military systems. Defense officials say Anthropic’s refusal to fully lift usage restrictions is threatening national security operations.

The Pentagon wants unrestricted access for all lawful military purposes, while Anthropic insists on limits involving mass surveillance of Americans and autonomous weapons.

Officials say negotiations have stalled, prompting warnings that Anthropic could be labeled a supply chain risk. That move would cancel contracts and restrict Claude’s use across defense-linked companies.

Anthropic says it supports U.S. national security but remains committed to safety guardrails. The dispute highlights growing friction between Washington and Silicon Valley over how far artificial intelligence should go in warfare and intelligence.
