New York Attorney General Letitia James has been appointed special prosecutor in the investigation into an alleged sexual assault at Cornell University in 2024, according to CBS New York.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order naming James to lead the case. Hochul said newly released information had raised concerns about the Cornell Police Department's investigation and the Tompkins County District Attorney's earlier decision not to bring criminal charges.

James will investigate the allegations and, if warranted, pursue charges and present evidence to a grand jury. Hochul said the appointment was intended to ensure the investigation proceeds independently.

The case involves a former Cornell student who alleges she was drugged and raped by multiple men at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. Cornell previously sanctioned several students, including expulsions and suspensions.

The student has since sued Cornell and seven men. Attorneys for several defendants have denied wrongdoing.

The Tompkins County DA later reopened the criminal investigation. Cornell said it supports James taking over the case.
