House Approves Russia And Iran Sanctions Package

The House passed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill Wednesday, sending the legislation to President Donald Trump despite opposition from several Democratic leaders, according to CBS News.

The measure passed 262-159, with 58 Democrats supporting it and seven Republicans voting against it.

The Senate approved the bill with broad bipartisan backing in August following more than a year of negotiations led by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.

The bill also targets Russian leaders, officials, oligarchs and financial institutions. At Trump’s request, it expands sanctions on Iran’s energy and weapons sectors while allowing presidential waivers on national-interest grounds.

Democratic leaders argued the legislation gives Trump excessive tariff authority that could increase costs for Americans.

Republicans said tariffs would strengthen the impact of sanctions and noted support from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The legislation now goes to Trump for consideration.
