Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for sweeping reforms to China's innovation system, saying stronger scientific research and technological self-reliance are essential to compete with global rivals.
Speaking at China's national science assembly in Beijing, Xi presented the State Pre-eminent Science and Technology Award to lithium battery scientist Chen Liquan and military radar expert Ben De. According to the report, each received a prize of 5 million yuan.
The report said Xi identified artificial intelligence, quantum technology, life sciences, advanced semiconductors, manufacturing, deep-sea and space research as national priorities.
He also called for attracting overseas scientific talent, expanding major research infrastructure and establishing clearer ethical standards for AI and life sciences while safeguarding national security.
