European regulators have opened a major investigation into X over sexualized images generated by its AI chatbot, Grok, intensifying scrutiny of Elon Musk’s platform.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, the EU authority responsible for enforcing the General Data Protection Regulation, said it launched a large-scale probe into whether X properly handled personal data belonging to EU citizens.

The investigation follows reports that Grok produced thousands of sexualized deepfake images, including content involving women and children.

Regulators are examining whether X violated core obligations under the GDPR. The commission said it has been in contact with X for weeks as concerns mounted.

Grok was developed by Musk’s AI company xAI, which acquired X last year and integrated the chatbot into the platform. Under pressure from governments, X recently restricted Grok’s ability to generate explicit images.

Separate investigations are underway in the United Kingdom and France. X has denied wrongdoing. The case highlights growing global concern over AI misuse and online safety.
