United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that human rights are under sustained global assault as powerful nations sideline international law in favor of force.
Speaking at the opening of the annual session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres said the rule of law is increasingly being replaced by raw power.
“Around the world, human rights are being pushed back deliberately, strategically and sometimes proudly.”

Human rights is being outmuscled by ‘rule of force’ globally, warns UN chief Antonio Guterres https://t.co/dZwXkT8hfI pic.twitter.com/NV75cI9vTm
He said violations are happening openly and are often led by those with the greatest influence. While avoiding direct accusations, he condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine and cited civilian deaths, calling for an end to the violence.
Guterres also pointed to serious rights violations in the Palestinian territories, warning that prospects for a two-state solution are being deliberately dismantled. He said the international community must not allow that outcome.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk echoed the warning, citing a global return to domination, military force, and disregard for the laws of war. He urged coordinated action to counter growing authoritarian trends.
