ICE Extends Texas Detention Centre Contract Despite Closure Calls

ICE argued that transferring detainees to other facilities is currently impracticable due to limited bed capacity and said Amentum's existing infrastructure makes changing contractors both costly and operationally challenging.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to extend its no-bid contract with Amentum Services to operate the Camp East Montana detention centre in El Paso, Texas, through September 2027, at a potential additional cost of $776 million.

According to the report, the extension could raise total payments to the contractor to more than $1.2 billion if the agreement remains in place for its full term.

The report said Amentum took over management of the facility in March after the previous contractor was replaced because of performance concerns.

The planned extension comes despite criticism from civil rights organisations. Reports released earlier this month by the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch alleged detainees were subjected to physical abuse, inadequate medical care and poor food quality at the facility.

According to the report, the detention centre has housed more than 2,000 migrants daily since October, while Democratic lawmakers continue to call for its closure and demand greater oversight of detention conditions.
