ICE Officer Pleads Not Guilty To Allegedly Lying About Minneapolis Shooting

ICE officer Christian Castro pleaded not guilty Friday to six federal charges alleging that he made false statements to the FBI about a January shooting in Minneapolis.

Prosecutors allege Castro shot 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg while firing through the front door of a Minneapolis home and later falsely told investigators that he had been attacked with a broom handle and snow shovel.

Minnesota authorities had previously charged Castro at the state level in May and sought his extradition. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declined to sign the extradition warrant, while the Department of Homeland Security described the state prosecution as unlawful and politically motivated.

Castro appeared in state court Thursday before being released and later turning himself in to federal authorities over the separate federal indictment.

The federal charges concern the statements Castro allegedly made to investigators, rather than a federal accusation that he unlawfully shot Sosa-Celis. Castro has denied all six charges. His next federal court hearing is scheduled for October 28.
