Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet at the BRICS summit in India, with border tensions and trade expected to dominate discussions, according to CNBC.

Xi’s visit will be his first to India since 2019, following the deadly 2020 border clashes that severely damaged bilateral ties. Relations have improved over the past year, with direct flights resuming and some restrictions on Chinese investment eased.

According to experts cited by CNBC, recent talks between senior Indian and Chinese officials have helped rebuild confidence, although territorial disputes remain unresolved. Reports of Chinese activity along India’s northeastern border highlight continued distrust.

Trade is another major concern. Bilateral commerce reached a record $151.1 billion in the year ending March 2026, but India’s trade deficit with China climbed to $112.16 billion. New Delhi is expected to seek greater market access and address the imbalance.

The meeting also comes as India manages strained trade relations with the Trump administration while pursuing a broader strategy of strategic diversification.
