Instagram is tightening its rules around AI-generated influencers, requiring accounts that appear to feature real people to disclose that they are artificially generated.
Previously, Instagram offered an “AI Creator” label that accounts could choose to display. Under the new approach, Meta will proactively identify suspected AI-generated profiles that appear to be run by real people and require them to use a new “AI-generated profile” label.
Accounts that fail to add the label could have their posts excluded from Instagram's recommendation systems, potentially reducing their reach significantly.
Instagram said the change responds to users' frustration at discovering that profiles they believed were operated by real people were actually artificial.
The move reflects a broader push by social media platforms to make AI-generated content more transparent. For users, the new labeling system could make it easier to distinguish genuine creators from synthetic personalities, while AI influencers that depend on algorithmic reach could face significant consequences if they fail to disclose their nature.
