Interior Department Leak Sparks Fight Over Park Narratives

An internal Interior Department database, first reported by Reuters and The Washington Post, revealed draft plans to revise or remove historical content at national park sites nationwide.

The documents outlined proposed changes to exhibits addressing African American history, LGBT rights, climate change, and other issues.

An Interior Department spokesperson said the materials were preliminary and deliberative, not final policy. Officials accused those who released the documents of altering records and leaking them unlawfully. The department said employees responsible would be held accountable.

President Donald Trump has directed federal agencies to eliminate what he calls anti-American ideology from cultural institutions. His executive actions have led to changes involving slavery exhibits and Confederate monuments.

The administration has also taken disciplinary steps against federal employees who publicly opposed its policies.
