Iranian operatives used artificial intelligence to help publish articles criticizing the US war against Iran across multiple media outlets, according to findings released by OpenAI and reported by CNN.

OpenAI said about a dozen publications worldwide carried roughly 100 articles attributed to seven fake journalists. The company banned ChatGPT accounts allegedly used to refine articles, prepare editorial pitches and generate social media comments promoting anti-US narratives.

The articles portrayed Washington as the aggressor and Iran as a resilient victim. However, OpenAI said it could not identify the specific organization behind the operation or establish whether it was directly connected to the Iranian government. The activity appeared consistent with a commercial influence campaign.

Some publications have begun reviewing their procedures. Middle East Monitor said the flagged articles had been removed while it examined its submission process.

Experts warned that AI allows foreign actors to conceal their involvement and distribute propaganda through legitimate media channels, potentially expanding the reach of misleading narratives during wartime.
