Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has backed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s next Supreme Leader after the elder Khamenei was killed in recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, according to Iran International.

Sources say Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba under pressure from the IRGC. The decision has not yet been publicly announced and is expected after the late leader’s burial.

Analysts say the move was driven by the regime’s need for stability during wartime. Mojtaba Khamenei has longstanding ties with the IRGC and has reportedly played a major role inside the Supreme Leader’s office for years.

Iran now faces a critical decision. The leadership could escalate the conflict with the United States and Israel or pursue negotiations to reduce pressure.

Either path carries risks as Iran faces military strikes, economic strain, and growing domestic unrest following years of political turmoil.
