Israel Says Hamas Gaza Chief Mohammad Sinwar Killed

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told lawmakers Wednesday that Israel has killed Mohammad Sinwar, Hamas’ top commander in Gaza and brother of the group’s former leader Yahya Sinwar.

"We eliminated Mohammad Deif, (Ismail) Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Sinwar," Netanyahu said in an address to the Knesset, confirming a string of high-profile Hamas deaths. The younger Sinwar was reportedly killed in a recent Israeli strike on a hospital in southern Gaza.

Netanyahu declared a “dramatic turn” in the war and claimed Israel is nearing Hamas’ “complete defeat.” He also said Israel has taken control of food distribution in Gaza, now overseen by a U.S.-backed aid group.

Hamas has not confirmed Sinwar’s death. He rose in the group’s ranks after Yahya Sinwar, believed to be behind the deadly October 2023 attack on Israel, was killed by Israeli forces earlier in the war.

The conflict has now stretched into its 20th month.
