Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi won a historic landslide victory in a snap election, giving her conservative Liberal Democratic Party a rare two-thirds supermajority in the lower house of parliament.
The LDP captured more than 310 of 465 seats, while the broader ruling coalition secured over 340, according to CNN.
It marks the first time since World War II that a single party has achieved such dominance, enabling the government to override the upper house and propose constitutional amendments.

Takaichi, Japan’s first female leader, called the election to strengthen her mandate after corruption scandals weakened the party. The gamble paid off as voters backed her economic agenda and assertive leadership style.
President Donald Trump congratulated Takaichi and praised her decision to hold the vote. Markets responded positively, with the Nikkei 225 jumping sharply on expectations of tax cuts and higher spending.
