Japan’s New Missile Deployment Near Taiwan Sparks China Fury

China sharply criticized Japan’s plan to deploy medium-range, surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island, calling the move “extremely dangerous” and a deliberate escalation near Taiwan, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

Yonaguni is Japan’s closest point to Taiwan, only 110 kilometers from the island. Tokyo argues the deployment is necessary to deter threats and strengthen national defense as tensions with Beijing intensify.

Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said preparations are “progressing steadily,” while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments — suggesting Japan could respond militarily if China attacked Taiwan — triggered a diplomatic storm.

Beijing has retaliated with travel advisories, suspended seafood imports, and halted government exchanges.

China accuses Japan of reviving militarism and warns that any interference in a Taiwan conflict would make Japanese bases primary PLA targets.

Meanwhile, Japan and the U.S. continue to expand joint military infrastructure across the first island chain to counter China’s regional ambitions.
