House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Republicans for cutting police funding even as President Donald Trump pushes a tough-on-crime agenda.
Trump recently deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and threatened similar action in Chicago and other Democratic-run cities.
When asked if the capital feels safer, Jeffries said he noticed no change, though he spends much of his time at the Capitol. He stressed that real public safety comes from adequately funding local police.

“Republicans have actually cut funding for local law enforcement,” Jeffries told reporters, questioning how that improves safety. He argued that the best way to protect communities is by strengthening partnerships between police and the public.
Trump’s high-profile moves highlight a political divide: Democrats risk being cast as soft on crime, while Jeffries insists his party supports law enforcement and prioritizes community safety.
