California Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez has acknowledged making “personal mistakes” outside his marriage after reports linking him to an alleged encounter with a congressional aide prompted a House Ethics Committee investigation.

According to report in New York Post, the inquiry expanded following allegations that Gomez was seen kissing a congressional aide at a Washington, D.C., social gathering in 2023.

Gomez had previously disputed the claims but later released a statement admitting to conduct that caused pain to his wife and family, while maintaining that his actions did not violate the law or House ethics rules.

The Los Angeles-area congressman said he takes full responsibility for his behavior and has sought professional assistance to repair relationships with his family.

He emphasized that the matter involved consensual conduct and pledged to continue working toward personal accountability and healing.

The report said the investigation remains ongoing. Gomez has given no indication that he intends to resign from Congress as scrutiny over lawmakers’ personal conduct and ethics standards continues to grow on Capitol Hill.
