A New York judge has ordered that jurors in Luigi Mangione's upcoming murder trial remain anonymous, citing concerns about potential harassment and intimidation.

Justice Gregory Carro issued the ruling Tuesday, with jury selection expected to begin on September 8.

Mangione is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk in December 2024. According to the report, the case attracted widespread media attention and became a major topic across social media.

Prosecutors are expected to present extensive evidence, including hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, fingerprints, DNA, a mobile phone, a firearm allegedly linked to the shooting through ballistics, and a notebook.

Defense attorneys have indicated they could argue that Mangione experienced an extreme mental health breakdown.

The judge also ordered that an overflow courtroom be available to accommodate members of the press and public if the main courtroom reaches capacity.

Mangione separately faces a federal stalking case scheduled for January, adding another major legal proceeding to his calendar.
