Jury Rules Facebook Misled New Mexico Users About Privacy Protections

The case, filed by New Mexico in 2021, followed revelations that Cambridge Analytica had obtained data from as many as 87 million Facebook users.

A Santa Fe jury has found Meta liable for allegedly misleading New Mexico residents about Facebook’s privacy protections, data practices, hate speech and misinformation policies.

The case, filed by New Mexico in 2021, followed revelations that Cambridge Analytica had obtained data from as many as 87 million Facebook users.

State attorneys argued that Meta’s public statements gave users an inaccurate understanding of how their personal information could be shared with third parties. Meta disputed the allegations, saying the state relied on selective statements and maintained that it does not sell users’ personal information.

Judge Francis Mathew will determine the monetary penalties resulting from the violations identified by the jury. New Mexico previously rejected a proposed settlement involving 47 states and chose to continue with the trial.

The verdict comes as Meta faces additional lawsuits concerning the alleged effects of its platforms on users.
