Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has called on Senator Mitch McConnell to publicly address concerns about his health or resign from office, citing the senator's prolonged absence from the U.S. Senate.
According to the report, Beshear questioned whether McConnell remains capable of fulfilling his responsibilities after more than six weeks without voting or participating in official Senate business.
The report said Beshear noted that McConnell has not cast a vote or carried out public duties since reports of his hospitalisation, communicating with constituents only through written statements and a small number of photographs.
The governor argued that updates from the Senate's attending physician have not adequately addressed whether McConnell is able to speak, reason or effectively perform the duties of a U.S. senator.
According to the report, Beshear said elected officials have a responsibility to be transparent about health issues that may affect their ability to serve, while political debate continues over McConnell's prolonged absence from public life.
