Larry Summers Quits OpenAI Board After Epstein Emails Surface

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers resigned from the OpenAI board on Wednesday, days after newly released congressional documents revealed years of personal correspondence between him and Jeffrey Epstein.

Summers said he is stepping back from all public roles to “rebuild trust,” while Harvard University — where he once served as president — has opened a new investigation into his Epstein ties, according to The Harvard Crimson.

His departure comes as Congress, with near-unanimous support, voted to force the Justice Department to release its Epstein files. President Donald Trump had resisted the effort for months before abruptly reversing course.

The scandal has remained politically volatile, fueled by accusations from some Trump supporters that the administration has hidden key details about Epstein’s death and his connections to powerful figures.

Summers joined OpenAI’s board in 2023 after the brief ouster of CEO Sam Altman. He also holds positions with Skillsoft and Santander.
