Lester Holt is stepping away from anchoring “NBC Nightly News” after 10 years as the program’s primary host, he told co-workers in a Monday morning email, NBC News confirmed.

“The time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of Nightly News,” he wrote in a note to coworkers, which NBC shared. “It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do.”

Holt added that he would be continuing to report and anchor for the “Dateline NBC” program full time.

“I will be expanding my footprint on the broadcast and crafting Dateline hours on subjects I care deeply
about,” he wrote.

Semafor’s Max Tani was the first to report on Holt’s imminent departure.

Holt will continue to anchor “NBC Nightly News” at least through the start of the summer.

“As we get closer, I’ll of course firm up the date and keep all of you in the loop,” he shared.

Holt began his NBC career in 2000, anchoring “Newsfront” and then his own show, “Lester Holt Live,” on MSNBC. He went on to become the weekend anchor for “NBC Nightly News” in 2007 before getting the regular anchor position in 2015. Holt took over for then-longtime “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, who was caught lying about details of a story.

Holt is one of many legacy media mainstays to recently transition out of the spotlight. MSNBC reportedly cancelled Joy Reid’s nighttime program. CNN also parted ways with anchor Jim Acosta in January.
