Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term on Sunday, securing more than 51% of the vote against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who has vowed to challenge the result in court.
The election campaign focused on crime, corruption and living costs. Despite dissatisfaction over household expenses and public safety, Lula retained enough support to defeat Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump.
The result preserves Lula’s foreign policy emphasis on national sovereignty, ties with China and cooperation with the Global South. His next term will face challenges from a divided electorate, a more conservative Congress and continuing concerns about Brazil’s economy and security.
