Major Quake Shakes Southern Japan, Thousands Evacuated

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday, causing widespread damage, power outages and a shopping mall explosion that left several people feared dead, according to Reuters.

The report said the shallow quake injured at least 50 people, disrupted roads and bridges, and prompted evacuation orders for about 300,000 residents. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said authorities were still assessing the full extent of the damage as 3,600 troops were deployed to assist rescue and recovery operations.

The report said rail services across Kyushu were suspended, Kumamoto Airport temporarily closed, and nearly 48,000 homes lost electricity.

Semiconductor manufacturer TSMC evacuated workers from its Kumamoto facility, while officials confirmed there were no abnormalities at nearby nuclear power plants. A tsunami warning was later lifted.
