Tokenized stock trading is expanding rapidly in overseas markets, even as major American companies resist having blockchain-based versions of their shares traded on certain platforms.

According to Bitwise Asset Management, trading volume on Robinhood Chain rose from $526 million in July to $11.31 billion in September. Tokenized equities have also emerged as a fast-growing category on Solana.

However, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Alphabet, Qualcomm and several other companies have objected to their shares being offered through OKXICE, a platform launched by crypto exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange. Sixteen companies had objected as of Wednesday.

The debate centres on shareholder protections, voting rights and whether token holders receive benefits comparable to traditional investors. Supporters argue tokenization could expand access, improve liquidity and enable round-the-clock trading.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has introduced a temporary pathway for tokenized stocks, allowing companies to object before trading begins.
