A massive fire broke out Thursday night at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery near Los Angeles, sending flames and smoke into the night sky. The facility, built in 1911, is the largest refinery on the West Coast and processes 276,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Fire officials said crews arrived within minutes and contained the blaze to one section of the refinery. One tank holding gasoline and diesel fuel continued to burn for hours as crews worked to cool surrounding areas. No injuries were reported, and Chevron confirmed all employees were safe and accounted for.
