As many as 11 million US workers could need to switch occupations by 2035 as artificial intelligence and automation reshape the labor market, according to a McKinsey Global Institute report cited by CNN.
About 25 million affected workers may remain in their existing occupations as industry growth offsets automation-related losses. The remaining 11 million could require entirely different careers, making workforce mobility a central challenge.
The shift comes as the labor market is already experiencing weak hiring and limited worker turnover. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job openings fell to a five-month low in August, while voluntary quits remained near a six-year low.
Worker confidence has also deteriorated. Glassdoor’s employee confidence measure reached a record low, while the Conference Board reported consumer confidence falling to 81.9 in September.
