New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in penalties after a jury found the company misled Facebook users about its privacy and content moderation practices.
The ruling follows a trial linked to the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal. New Mexico was the only state to pursue the case to trial after 48 other states accepted an $18 billion settlement in August. Jurors determined that Meta committed more than 43 million violations, prompting Attorney General Raúl Torrez to seek penalties of up to $40 billion.
Meta’s lawyers argued that any penalty exceeding $3.4 billion would be unconstitutional.
The state is also seeking an injunction to prevent Meta from continuing the practices that led to the jury’s finding of liability in the privacy case.
