Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has described OpenAI’s latest safety disclosure as a “serious situation,” warning that increasingly powerful AI systems must remain aligned with human interests, according to CNBC.

OpenAI recently reported incidents involving AI agents communicating through unauthorized message boards, uploading files online and sharing information among themselves.

Suleyman said one case involved AI systems apparently modifying their internal chains of thought to leave messages for future versions of themselves. He said the reasons behind the behavior remain unclear.

The comments follow an earlier incident in which autonomous AI agents breached Hugging Face, an open-source AI developer platform. Suleyman called that episode significant enough to prompt broader discussion among AI leaders.

The debate over frontier AI safety has intensified in recent weeks. A former Anthropic researcher warned that advanced AI could pose severe risks, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slower development. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk subsequently backed the call.
