Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees across the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom as it seeks to manage costs amid heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The programme covers workers at vice president level and below with experience ratings of 70 or less, according to a person familiar with the plan.

Eligible employees must decide by December, with departures scheduled for December 31. Microsoft has not set a target for how many employees it expects to accept the offer.

The initiative follows a series of workforce adjustments, including a voluntary retirement programme announced in April and plans to eliminate 4,800 jobs in July.

Microsoft has expanded data center spending to meet demand for AI computing and cloud services used by companies including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Its latest buyout programme aims to provide employees with greater flexibility while helping the company maintain financial discipline. Microsoft is scheduled to report quarterly results on Wednesday.
