Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has obtained a blue checkmark on his English-language account on X, raising fresh concerns about compliance with US sanctions, as reported by the Tech Transparency Project.
The development comes after X removed verification from his Farsi-language account earlier in March following scrutiny. His English account, which has around 175,000 followers, continues to post updates on the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, according to the report.

Khamenei has been under US Treasury sanctions since 2019, which restrict American companies from engaging in financial transactions with him. X’s policy states that sanctioned individuals are not allowed to purchase its Premium subscription, which grants the blue checkmark.
The Tech Transparency Project said the platform may have received payments from sanctioned Iranian entities. Neither X nor the US Treasury responded to requests for comment, the report said.
